On September 7th, Equifax announced a data breach potentially affecting as many as 143 Million American consumers. Those affected could have their personal information compromised by this incident. Many businesses, including DCECU, use the credit bureaus as part of their routine business, and report consumer information to the bureaus. DCECU was not breached.
“If you have a credit report, there’s a good chance that you’re one of the 143 million American consumers whose sensitive personal information was exposed in a data breach at Equifax, one of the nation’s three major credit reporting agencies.”Federal Trade Commission Attorney Seena Gressin (source)
According to Equifax, the information accessed primarily included names, Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses and, in some instances, driver’s license numbers.
